Iran fought valiantly to a 0-0 draw against Belgium in a World Cup Group G clash, a result that keeps their aspirations for advancing in the tournament alive. Despite Belgium being reduced to 10 men for the final third of the match, Iran faced intense pressure, with goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand proving to be a formidable last line of defense.
Beiranvand was in exceptional form, making a total of seven crucial saves throughout the encounter, earning his second clean sheet in as many group games. Iran also benefited from a red card shown to Belgium’s Nathan Ngoy in the 66th minute, who was dismissed for denying a scoring opportunity. This advantage, however, did not translate into overwhelming possession for Iran, who were outshot and out-passed by their opponents.
Belgium, even with a man down, created the game’s best chance late on. Maxim De Cuyper’s powerful shot in the 86th minute was brilliantly parried away by a diving Beiranvand, preserving the draw. Earlier in the match, Iran had a goal disallowed by VAR for offside and encroaching, and Mehdi Taremi missed a point-blank opportunity in the second half.
With this draw, both Iran and Belgium have accumulated two points from their initial two matches in Group G. The result leaves the door ajar for either New Zealand or Egypt to potentially take the lead in the group. Iran’s next fixture is against Egypt in Seattle, while Belgium will face New Zealand in Vancouver on the final matchday, June 26.
