Female boda boda operators in Kampala recently participated in a comprehensive training initiative aimed at bolstering their road safety knowledge and professional standards. Organized by the Kampala Twezimbe Women Boda Boda Riders Association, in partnership with the Uganda Police Force, the Intelligent Transport Monitoring System (ITMS), and private sector stakeholders, the event focused on equipping riders with enhanced skills for safe and responsible operation.
The training addressed the unique challenges faced by women in the predominantly male-dominated transport sector. Participants received instruction on traffic law compliance, customer service excellence, and mental health awareness, with the overarching goal of fostering professionalism and challenging societal stereotypes.
Mukeshimana Dativah, Chairperson of the association, emphasized the need for behavioural change and a redefined public perception of women in the boda boda industry, stating, “Female riders should be recognised as professional, safe, and responsible road users.” This sentiment was echoed by Adrine Kobusingye, Chairperson of the NRM Women’s League, who lauded the initiative for promoting discipline and self-reliance.
Officials from the Uganda Police Force urged strict adherence to traffic regulations to mitigate accidents and penalties. Discussions also highlighted the government’s plans to reintroduce the Express Penalty System (EPS) to improve road safety compliance, with feedback from a recent validation exercise indicating positive public reception. Representatives from the Ministry of Works and Transport stressed the collective role of all road users in creating safer journeys.
Furthermore, insights into advancements in e-mobility and sustainable transportation technologies were shared by private sector participants. The collaborative effort underscored the significance of partnerships between government bodies, industry players, and rider associations in elevating road safety standards and empowering women within the transport sector.
This initiative signifies a commitment to ensuring women riders are integral to promoting professionalism and enhancing road safety as Uganda’s transport landscape evolves.
