The Catholic Church reportedly denied a requiem Mass for the iconic Kadongo Kamu singer, Herman Basudde, upon his death 29 years ago. Basudde, who had expressed his faith through his music, met his untimely end in a road accident while traveling to his ancestral home in Masaka.
Sources suggest the initial reason for the denial stemmed from accusations of Basudde having multiple partners and glorifying polygamy in his music, which is contrary to Catholic teachings. The parish priest reportedly escalated the issue, leading to his temporary departure from the village to avoid friction with the deceased’s fans, some of whom vandalized the catechist’s home in frustration.
Further allegations painted Basudde as rebellious, with some clergy accusing him of abandoning religion for witchcraft. He was also criticized for allegedly sensationalizing his music through provocative dancers and commercializing the Kadongo Kamu genre. These rifts within the clergy led to some religious leaders refusing to conduct burial rites, including a formal church funeral Mass.
Amidst the drama, a spontaneous, and somewhat scandalous, performance by an unknown woman occurred at the vigil. Despite the church’s stance, prayers were offered for Basudde by priests from Ggaba Catholic Parish and fellow singer Fred Ssebatta. However, it remains unclear if a full requiem Mass was ever conducted.
The Catholic Church in Uganda has never officially commented on the specific reasons for denying Basudde a church burial. However, according to Canon Law 1184, a church funeral can be denied to “notorious apostates, heretics, and schismatics” or those whose actions would cause “public scandal of the faithful.”
Basudde’s untimely death occurred on June 11, 1997, following a road crash on the Masaka-Kampala Road. He was traveling to visit his sick father when a truck overtaking him caused his vehicle to overturn. His family, friends, and fellow musician Paul Kafeero honored his memory, with Kafeero ultimately buying the coffin he was buried in, as per Basudde’s wishes, he was also buried with his guitar.
