President Donald Trump recently introduced a significantly enhanced Boeing 747-8 jumbo jet designated for the Air Force One fleet. This luxurious aircraft was a donation from the Qatari government, received by the U.S. last year as an “unconditional” gift.
The military has completed substantial modifications on the approximately $400 million jet, transforming it into what Trump described as a “flying White House” with unparalleled luxury.
According to an Air Force press release, the jet will undergo initial commissioning flights to test its modifications before it is utilized for presidential transport. Upgrades focused on security, communications, logistics, and advanced technology, with the Air Force stating any potential threats from its previous ownership have been “neutralized.”
The interior modifications are reportedly minimal, while the exterior features a new patriotic paint scheme of red, white, blue, and gold.
The Qatari royal family’s donation of the Boeing 747-8 to the Department of Defense in May 2025 had previously drawn criticism, with some questioning potential conflicts of interest and constitutionality regarding the high-value gift.
Despite federal law limiting the value of gifts accepted by U.S. officials, the White House maintains the acceptance of the aircraft is legal. It has been pledged that the jet will be transferred to Trump’s presidential library after his term.
Trump praised the “workmanship” and the quality of materials, woods, and engines, calling them “the finest” and expressing his honor and gratitude to the Emir of Qatar.
The new jet will serve as an interim replacement for older models, with one of the Air Force One’s 747-200B jets, in service since 1990, reportedly being phased out. It will be used until Boeing delivers its long-delayed VC-25B jets, intended for future long-term Air Force One duties.
