Senegal’s World Cup aspirations face a stern test as they prepare to confront Norway’s formidable striker, Erling Haaland. Following a confidence-shaking 3-1 defeat to France, the Lions of Teranga are grappling with how to best neutralize the Manchester City star’s threat.
Coach Pape Bouna Thiaw is reportedly considering significant defensive changes. While captain Kalidou Koulibaly returned for the France match, his performance against Kylian Mbappe, who netted twice, has led to speculation he might be dropped. Koulibaly, a veteran with 104 caps, has had limited recent game time due to an injury sustained in April, and his match sharpness was visibly lacking.
An alternative for Senegal is the promising 20-year-old Mamadou Sarr. Sarr impressed when deputizing for Koulibaly during the Africa Cup of Nations and has since joined Chelsea. However, his own lack of consistent starts at Stamford Bridge meant he wasn’t initially favoured against France. Thiaw’s choice between the experienced Koulibaly and the emerging Sarr will be crucial in Senegal’s bid to contain Haaland.
Norway, on the other hand, enter the fixture with boosted morale after a 4-1 victory over Iraq, marking their first World Cup win since 1998, with Haaland scoring a brace. Despite their strong start, Norwegian coach Stale Solbakken has expressed dissatisfaction with certain aspects of their play, particularly their defense. While Haaland poses a significant threat, Senegal also boasts dangerous forwards in Nicolas Jackson and Sadio Mane, who will be looking to exploit Norway’s defensive vulnerabilities, as the Scandinavian side has struggled to keep clean sheets.
This encounter promises tactical intrigue as both teams seek a crucial result to advance their World Cup campaigns. The focus remains on how Senegal will devise a plan to handle the explosive Haaland.
