The Rwenzori Region is officially Ebola-free, according to local leaders who are encouraging international tourists and athletes to attend the upcoming Rwenzori Marathon without apprehension. This firm declaration aims to counteract misinformation that has created undue fear and negatively impacted the region’s vital tourism sector.
Recent reports, largely circulating on social media, had falsely suggested a connection between Kasese District and imported Ebola cases. Members of Parliament from the area, including Benjamin Kabyanga Cardet, Sarah Ithungu Masereka, and David Mulindwa Isimbwa, convened a press conference to set the record straight. They emphasized that the Ebola cases reported in Uganda were isolated, imported incidents that have since been successfully contained by health authorities, and that Kasese currently has no active cases.
This false narrative has already led to a slump in tourism, with hotels and other hospitality businesses reporting cancellations. Leaders are urging against such unfounded panic, highlighting that the region is secure and prepared to host the thousands of expected visitors for the marathon.
Security agencies have reportedly bolstered their coordination to ensure the safety of all attendees for the marathon and other tourism activities. The legislators stressed the importance of maintaining stability and confidence, particularly as the event, now in its fifth year, is a significant draw for international participants, with over 25 countries already registered.
Furthermore, the leaders advocated for a balanced approach, requesting that government authorities not suspend economic activities like tourism events based on misinformation. Instead, they called for continued collaboration between the Ministry of Health and event organizers to uphold safety protocols while allowing tourism and local businesses to thrive. The Rwenzori Marathon is recognized for its role in promoting Uganda’s tourism potential and the scenic beauty of the region on a global scale.
