Frustration is mounting in Kanungu District as locals voice their anger over the neglected state of the Kanyantorogo–Buhoma–Bwindi road.

The 32-kilometer murram road is the primary access route to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a globally recognized destination for its mountain gorilla population.

Residents, including boda boda rider Agaba Twinomujuni, accuse local and national leaders of failing to fulfill promises to upgrade the road. “We have waited for a long time. Every time we meet our leaders… they have ignored the problem,” Twinomujuni stated.

The poor road conditions have made travel arduous for years, impacting both tourists and the local community. Tour operators report increased travel times and frequent vehicle breakdowns, diminishing the visitor experience.

They caution that if urgent repairs are not undertaken, the road’s condition could severely damage tourism activities and the revenue generated from visitors heading to Bwindi.

Area leaders, including Kinkizi West MP James Kaberuka and Kanungu District Woman MP Patience Kinshaba Nkunda, have acknowledged the road’s poor state and its significance to tourism. Both have pledged to advocate for its rehabilitation with the Ministry of Works and Transport, urging patience from the affected community.
