Two private security guards have been hospitalized following an accidental shooting at their workplace in Kamuli Municipality. The incident occurred on Friday morning at the premises of Blue Light Guards (U) Limited when a guard, identified as Anthony Batanda, 23, was reportedly conducting firearm safety checks.

A bullet was discharged unintentionally, striking colleagues Dennis Kabiri, 20, in the left toe, and Hussein Mugolo, 58, in the left leg. Both injured guards were promptly taken to Kamuli General Hospital for treatment.

Busoga North Police Spokesperson Samson Lubega stated that an investigation into unlawful wounding has been launched. He emphasized the critical importance of strict adherence to firearm handling and safety procedures for all licensed firearm holders and private security personnel. Lubega also warned that private security company owners will be held accountable for any operational deficiencies or failures by their recruits.

The families of the injured guards have voiced significant distress, particularly Mr. Mugolo, who is his family’s sole provider. His wife, Nabirye Hussein, appealed to Blue Light Guards (U) Limited for immediate financial and medical support, citing a worrying pattern of security firms abandoning employees injured on duty.

This incident echoes previous cases in the region where private security guards have been left to fend for themselves after suffering on-the-job injuries. Concerns are mounting that despite rigorous training requirements, companies may not be providing adequate support mechanisms for their employees in critical situations.

Police investigations into the Friday shooting are continuing, with a focus on ensuring accountability and preventing future accidents. The public awaits further updates as the situation unfolds and discussions around employer responsibility in the private security industry intensify.
