Inspector General of Government (IGG), Lady Justice Aisha Batala Naluzze, has emphasized the critical role of public participation in the ongoing fight against corruption and the promotion of good governance in Uganda. These remarks were made during the flagging-off ceremony for the Anti-Corruption Caravan destined for the Bunyoro Sub-Region.
Naluzze highlighted that corruption diverts essential resources needed for public services, leading to unbuilt schools, inadequate healthcare, and poor infrastructure, thus hindering the nation’s social and economic progress. She stressed that the responsibility of tackling corruption doesn’t rest solely with enforcement agencies but requires active engagement from citizens demanding transparency and accountability from their leaders and institutions.
The Anti-Corruption Caravan is designed to bridge this gap by facilitating direct interaction between accountability bodies and citizens. Through community dialogues, awareness campaigns, and public forums, the initiative aims to empower citizens to oversight service delivery and report corrupt practices.
“You are the first line of defence against corruption. Your vigilance, courage, and willingness to report wrongdoing are indispensable,” Naluzze stated, urging the people of Bunyoro and Ugandans at large to be active participants. She also acknowledged the vital role of the media in amplifying anti-corruption messages and fostering public awareness.
The caravan will visit several districts including Kiryandongo, Masindi, Buliisa, Kagadi, Kikuube, and Hoima District, concluding in Hoima City. This journey is part of a broader effort to enhance citizen engagement and strengthen public oversight, ultimately contributing to improved governance and sustainable development across Uganda.
Speaking at the same event, ActionAid International Uganda Country Director Samuel Ntale challenged leaders to move beyond rhetoric and demonstrate tangible action against corruption. The caravan is a collaborative effort supported by various partners dedicated to making accountability a reality for all Ugandans.
