A planned series of direct negotiations between the United States and Iran has been put on hold. The postponement occurred after U.S. Vice President JD Vance unexpectedly delayed his planned trip to Switzerland for the talks.

The White House stated late on Thursday that Vance would not be attending, attributing the decision to “logistical” issues that were “not simple or predictable”. This development comes just a day after the U.S. lifted its naval blockade of Iran, following the signing of a deal intended to de-escalate the ongoing conflict.

While the recent agreement stipulated an end to fighting in Lebanon, reports from the Lebanese health ministry indicate that Israeli airstrikes overnight resulted in at least 18 fatalities in the southern part of the country. The Israeli military asserted that its forces targeted the Iran-backed group Hezbollah and confirmed the deaths of four Israeli soldiers.

Prior to the White House’s announcement, media outlets linked to Hezbollah reported that the talks were suspended due to continued Israeli aerial bombardments. The negotiators were expected to engage in “technical discussions” regarding the implementation of the recently signed agreement.

Switzerland’s foreign ministry confirmed the postponement of the talks, which were set to occur at the Burgenstock resort. Preparations for the discussions, however, are reportedly continuing. The negotiations were anticipated to cover the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding and delve into longer-term issues, including Iran’s nuclear program.

The agreement, encompassing 14 points, includes provisions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, ensuring Iran does not possess nuclear weapons, a reconstruction plan for Iran, and the termination of U.S. sanctions. Both parties are expected to reach a final resolution within 60 days, with the possibility of an extension.

Despite the deal, exchanges of fire between Israel and Hezbollah have persisted. Lebanon’s state news agency described recent bombardments as the most intense of the war, with the Lebanese health ministry reporting significant casualties and damage to buildings.
