Poverty and a shortage of fundamental personal items like underwear are significant deterrents for pregnant women seeking antenatal care in Uganda’s Bugiri District. Local leaders and expectant mothers cite these financial and social barriers as reasons for avoiding health facilities, with some opting for Traditional Birth Attendants instead.

District officials have highlighted that many women feel ashamed to attend clinics due to inadequate or worn-out clothing, including the absence of underwear. This embarrassment, coupled with alleged mistreatment and stigma from some healthcare providers, pushes vulnerable mothers away from essential medical services.

The challenge is particularly acute in rural areas where household budgets are strained, prioritizing food and education over items like maternity wear. Limited spousal support during pregnancy further compounds the difficulties faced by these women.

While acknowledging the government’s provision of Mama Kits, residents also point to long distances to health centers as another obstacle. They appeal for expanded antenatal services at lower-level health units.

However, health workers emphasize the necessity of physical examinations during antenatal visits for monitoring maternal and fetal well-being. They maintain patient privacy and encourage all expectant mothers to utilize the free antenatal services, also noting men’s reluctance to attend due to mandatory HIV testing.

Low attendance remains a persistent issue, prompting calls for intensified community sensitization by local leaders on the importance of early and regular antenatal check-ups.
