The rugby world in Uganda is still grappling with the tragic loss of Sydney Gongodyo, a gifted player for Pirates Rugby Club and the National Team, who was killed by a mob.
Last Saturday, Kyadondo Rugby Club hosted a match between The Black Pirates and The Heathens. While the Pirates secured a decisive victory, the game itself was secondary to the somber atmosphere. The event served as a gathering for those who knew Gongodyo, knew of his talent, or simply wanted to show solidarity with a grieving community.
Gongodyo, who had recently competed in Nairobi, was celebrated for his skill and spirit. The memorial match provided a space for shared remembrance and a reflection on the unique bond within the rugby fraternity.
Like Gongodyo, the author attended Namilyango College, a prominent rugby-playing school. Rugby, the author reflects, is a sport that teaches lessons in resilience and camaraderie, a unique blend of intense physicality and post-game respect. It’s a sport where adversaries become friends after the final whistle, mirroring life’s unpredictable highs and lows.
Following the match, attendees gathered for food and drinks. The legendary Kyadondo pork was a sought-after treat, though the beer was reportedly warm. The mood, despite the tragedy, reflected Gongodyo’s own life – lived fiercely but with discipline and loyalty. His absence leaves a void, and he will be deeply missed by all.
