The Kings Park Arena is poised to host a pivotal Uganda Rugby Premiership semifinal as Stanbic Black Pirates face off against rivals Heathens. This fixture carries a heavy emotional undertone for Pirates, returning to the ground where they held their final farewell for their late teammate, Sydney Gongodyo, less than two weeks prior.
Both teams are expected to observe a moment of silence for Gongodyo before kickoff, mirroring the solemnity of the first leg. In that initial encounter, Pirates secured a 15-3 victory over Heathens, with tries from Eric Mulamula and Alex Aturinda, alongside a conversion from William Nkore, giving them a significant advantage. Matthew Musasizi contributed a penalty for Heathens.
Pirates’ defense coach Martin Karugonjo described the win as “bittersweet,” acknowledging the void left by their fallen brother. He also defended tactical decisions, such as deploying club captain Isaac Masanga-Zira at blindside flank, as part of a modern forward strategy.
Heathens coach Tolbert Onyango cited costly mistakes in crucial moments as the reason for their first-leg deficit. Despite the availability of senior players returning from a canceled Africa Sevens tournament, Onyango opted to trust a younger squad he’s been developing. He remains optimistic about their chances, though they face the daunting task of defeating Pirates at their formidable Kings Park home.
Pirates boast an impressive home record, having not lost a competitive fifteen-a-side match at Kings Park since 2023. Historically, Pirates have also held the upper hand in recent encounters, winning five of their last six fifteen-a-side matches against Heathens since January 2025. This rivalry has been a dominant force in Ugandan rugby, with these two clubs frequently contesting the Premiership title.
The stakes are high; a Pirates victory would grant them the privilege of hosting the final. Conversely, if Heathens manage to overturn the deficit, they would play the final at Kyadondo as guests of Buffaloes.
