NEMA Honors Environmental Champions at 3rd Sustainability Awards

Kampala – Uganda’s environmental stewards were lauded at the 3rd National Environment Sustainability Awards (NESA) 2026, hosted by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) at the Serena Hotel. The prestigious event underscored the critical importance of environmental conservation and climate resilience in Uganda’s development agenda.

Under the overarching theme, “Innovation for Climate Resilience,” the ceremony convened a diverse assembly of stakeholders, including government officials, private sector leaders, academics, civil society representatives, local government delegates, and members of the media. Their collective presence highlighted a shared commitment to safeguarding the environment and fostering sustainable practices.

The event was graced by the presence of the Minister of Water and Environment, Maj. Gen. (Rtd.) Kahinda Otafiire, who emphasized the government’s steadfast support for environmental initiatives. Delivering the keynote address, the Governor of the Bank of Uganda, Michael Atingi-Ego, eloquently articulated the symbiotic relationship between environmental health and economic stability, positioning climate-focused innovation as a cornerstone for Uganda’s long-term prosperity.

NEMA Executive Director Barirega Akankwasah remarked that the awards serve as a powerful recognition of pioneering efforts and encourage broader engagement in sustainability. He stated, “These awards are more than just a ceremony; they are a testament to the power of collective action and a celebration of the pioneers who are forging paths toward a healthier planet.” Akankwasah further stressed that innovation is indispensable for Uganda’s adaptation and success in the face of escalating climate change challenges.

Winner selection was conducted through a demanding process involving expert scrutiny, on-site verification, and due diligence to ensure integrity. The awards spanned a wide array of categories, encompassing areas such as climate change research, biodiversity conservation, waste-to-resource solutions, climate leadership, protecting vulnerable ecosystems, promoting low-carbon development, fostering green manufacturing, advancing pollution control technologies, environmental journalism, enhancing community resilience, and sustainable finance.

NEMA expressed gratitude to all partners and stakeholders whose ongoing support is instrumental in advancing environmental compliance, conservation efforts, and climate action nationwide. The ceremony concluded with a renewed call for enhanced collaboration to tackle climate change effectively and build a more secure and sustainable future for Uganda.
