Following a protracted financial dispute that brought construction to a halt, the Church of Uganda Mothers’ Union is set to resume work on its multi-storey Mothers’ Union House project in Kampala.
A High Court arbitration ruling has brought an end to a long-standing disagreement with contractor Bucon Construction, much to the jubilation of the Mothers’ Union.
The core of the conflict revolved around payment claims for the initial phase of the eight-story building. Bucon Construction sought over Sh1 billion for completed work, a figure the Mothers’ Union, led by President Roseline Biingi Kawiso, contested, valuing the work done at approximately Sh400 million.
The dispute intensified when Bucon Construction took possession of the partially completed site, effectively stopping further development.
Through mediation overseen by Justice Simon Peter Kinobe Mutegeki of the High Court’s Civil Division, both parties reached an amicable settlement. Under the terms, the Mothers’ Union will pay Bucon Construction Sh500 million, and the contractor will relinquish the site, allowing construction to recommence.
This settlement addresses the legal action initiated by Bucon Construction over alleged non-payment, which had stalled the ambitious project. The Mothers’ Union House, envisioned as a significant revenue-generating asset for Church programmes, has faced numerous setbacks due to funding and management issues.
President Kawiso expressed optimism that the resolution heralds a new chapter for the project, which is intended to house multipurpose conference facilities, commercial spaces, and health amenities. The completed structure is expected to bolster Church ministries and social initiatives.
The agreement marks a crucial turning point, with construction anticipated to move forward as both parties adhere to the court-mediated terms.
