The health of prominent lawyer and politician Erias Lukwago is reportedly declining significantly while he remains in detention. His wife, Nnaalongo Zawedde Lubwama, has expressed extreme concern over his condition, particularly his struggles with breathing.

Ms. Lubwama stated that Lukwago is currently very weak, attributing his condition partly to the environment at Machakos Hospital, where he is being held. The hospital houses numerous patients, including those with tuberculosis, necessitating Lukwago to wear a face mask continuously.

She explained that these breathing complications have persisted since his release from a basement, and the constant need to wear a mask appears to aggravate his lung issues. The family is holding onto hope that Lukwago will be granted bail soon.

“We are hopeful that he will be granted bail on Monday so that he can leave custody, receive proper medical care, and begin recovering,” Ms. Lubwama stated.

Lukwago has reportedly instructed his legal team to expedite the filing of all necessary documents for his bail application, which is scheduled to be heard by the trial magistrate on Monday. The family hopes this will allow him to seek specialized medical treatment outside of detention.

Lukwago was apprehended by military operatives earlier in the week and subsequently charged with misprision of treason. His legal troubles are believed to stem from his decision to sue the Chief of Defence Forces and the State on behalf of a client, concerning the alleged abduction of opposition figure Kizza Besigye and his associate from Nairobi.

This situation has drawn attention from supporters and family members who are anxiously awaiting the outcome of the bail hearing, hoping for a swift resolution that prioritizes Lukwago’s health and well-being.
