Zalwango Lukwago, wife of former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, shared a distressing account of her husband’s recent arrest at a gathering of lawyers. Struggling with emotion, she described the early morning hours when security operatives surrounded their home, eventually forcing their way inside.

She detailed how she attempted to resist the intruders but was kicked down as they entered the bedroom and apprehended Mr. Lukwago. The days that followed were marked by intense fear and uncertainty, as the family had no direct contact with him and relied on social media updates for information.

Zalwango expressed deep concern for her husband’s health, noting his ongoing recovery from spinal complications sustained during a previous arrest. She emphasized that he requires specific medical care, including prescribed medication and dietary adjustments.

Upon finally meeting him, she stated that Mr. Lukwago reported experiencing both psychological and physical torture while in detention. He allegedly suffered repeated slaps that affected his hearing and was held in a poorly ventilated space, exacerbating his respiratory issues. His arm mobility was also reportedly impacted.

Appealing to the Judiciary, Zalwango pleaded for greater compassion and a stronger commitment to human dignity and fundamental rights. She questioned the decision to remand her husband, given his delicate health condition, suggesting that alternative measures should have been considered.

She extended her gratitude to the legal team, journalists, and the Uganda Law Society for their unwavering support throughout this ordeal, emphasizing that their solidarity provides strength to the family as they navigate the ongoing legal proceedings with hope for justice.
