Family members of former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago have shared their anxieties and relief after finally visiting him at Luzira Prison. The visit, occurring on Friday afternoon, marked the first direct contact the family has had with Lukwago since his detention.

According to his wife, Zawedde Lubwama, the former Lord Mayor appeared visibly weakened and in considerable pain. She expressed alarm over his health, alleging that he had suffered trauma including ear injuries, which she linked to slaps sustained while being held in an undisclosed location prior to his official custody.

Lubwama stated that Lukwago is dealing with a condition called tinnitus, which she believes stems from exposure to loud noises during his detention. “I have found him weak, and his ears in pain because he has a condition known as tinnitus that is brought by exposure to repeated noise to the ear now due to the slappings he got while in the basement,” she told journalists. She also mentioned ongoing severe body pains.

Despite these distressing reports, the family acknowledged that prison authorities at Luzira have been providing some level of medical care, including access to doctors. They were also permitted to deliver a specialized mattress and food items to aid in his comfort and recovery.

The family conveyed that knowing Lukwago’s whereabouts provided a measure of relief after a period of uncertainty. “As a family, we are relieved that at least we now know where he is,” Zawedde commented.
