Twaha Kagabo, who previously represented Bukoto South, has opened up about his experience after joining the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM). Kagabo, who initially entered Parliament in 2021 on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket before defecting to NRM, expressed surprise at the internal dynamics of the ruling party.

Speaking on Sanyuka Television, Kagabo shared that his perception of the NRM changed significantly after becoming a member. “I became frustrated after joining NRM. I had a different picture, but when I joined, I realized there were some issues that were not proper. That made me disappointed,” he stated.

He further noted that the internal competition and disagreements within NRM were not unique, comparing them to similar situations in other political entities. “There is a lot of intrigue in NRM, but just like in the whole field of politics. You need to be very careful, otherwise things can become worse for you. There is a lot of disagreement and the intrigue is high,” Kagabo elaborated.

Kagabo’s political trajectory in Bukoto South faced considerable hurdles, including failing to secure the NRM party’s flag for the 2026 general election. Following his loss in the party primaries, he contested as an independent candidate while maintaining ties with the NRM, which consequently heightened political tensions in his constituency.

Ultimately, Kagabo lost his parliamentary seat in the January 2026 elections to NUP’s Hajj Yunus Mugabe, concluding a complex political period involving shifts between opposition and the ruling party, party primaries, and an independent bid. He dismissed claims that his cross-over to NRM or his criticisms of the opposition caused his electoral defeat, asserting his right to freedom of expression.
