The High Court trial of Molly Katanga, accused of murdering her husband Henry Katanga, experienced a dramatic interruption when Justice Rosette Comfort Kania abruptly left the bench. The incident occurred during the testimony of the defense’s third witness, an orthopedic surgeon who treated Molly Katanga following her husband’s death on November 2, 2023.
The surgeon testified that he treated Molly Katanga at International Hospital Kampala (now C-Care) for severe injuries to both hands, including multiple fractures. He explained that these wounds are “classic defense injuries,” consistent with someone attempting to protect themselves during an assault. The doctor noted that hospital staff had photographed these injuries as part of official medical records.
Proceedings devolved into chaos when the defense sought to have the surgeon identify printed photographs of Molly’s injuries. The prosecution strongly objected, arguing the witness could not authenticate printouts, having only seen digital versions. A prolonged and vocal dispute erupted between the legal teams, leading to an unchecked escalation of arguments.
As the courtroom became increasingly unruly, Justice Kania rose and exited, halting the day’s proceedings. This clash follows recent testimony from a forensic pathologist who admitted he had not personally examined Molly Katanga’s injuries and could not determine the position of the deceased at the time of the shooting.
Molly Katanga maintains her innocence against the murder charge. Her daughters and two others face charges of being accessories after the fact and destroying evidence, to which they have pleaded not guilty. The hearing is set to resume on June 23.
