State Minister for Fisheries, Robert Migadde, has strongly refuted claims circulating about a ban on fishing in Uganda. While campaigning for the NRM flagbearer in the Kalangala District Woman MP by-election, Migadde addressed residents and the fishing community at Lwanabatya Landing Site.
He explained that misinformation, particularly on social media, has created a false impression that fishing has been completely stopped. “People are allowed to fish, but they must use the right gear. The impression that fishing has been stopped is not true,” Migadde stated.
The minister reiterated that while fishing is permitted, strict adherence to fisheries regulations and the use of approved equipment are mandatory. He warned those involved in importing, distributing, or using illegal fishing gear that the government will continue to enforce the Fisheries and Aquaculture Act. This legislation carries severe penalties, including up to seven years in prison for importers of illegal gear and up to two years for users.
Migadde urged the fishing communities to actively cooperate with authorities by reporting any individuals or businesses involved in the trade of illegal fishing gear. He also called for unity among all stakeholders in the fishing sector to promote sustainable management of the resource.
Addressing concerns about corruption within fisheries enforcement, the minister mentioned that regular transfers of officers have been implemented to curb malpractice. He underscored that both those who give and receive bribes will face punishment if evidence is found. Furthermore, plans are underway to empower landing site management committees, granting them more authority in fisheries governance, including overseeing the destruction of confiscated illegal gear.
The campaign event also saw support from local leaders who urged residents to vote for the NRM candidate to strengthen the district’s representation and improve service delivery in the island communities.
