Teenage prostitution is a growing concern in Uganda, with young girls resorting to commercial sex work due to severe financial pressures and a lack of support from broken homes. These minors often aim to cover essential costs like school fees and food, with many parents failing to fulfill their obligations or struggling with issues like alcoholism.
The situation is not confined to Mbale City, where a recent report detailed the struggles of these young individuals. The Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development estimates that between 7,000 and 12,000 juveniles are involved in risky sexual activities across the country. This trend is particularly visible in trading centers frequented by truck drivers, indicating a widespread problem.
While acknowledging the difficult circumstances these girls face, community leaders, elders, and all responsible adults cannot afford to be passive observers. Simply expressing sadness is insufficient. A well-defined action plan is necessary to combat this worrying trend, which could become normalized as a means of survival.
Effective solutions must address the problem from the ground up. Local leaders and adults in communities should actively engage in educating, guiding, and counseling these vulnerable girls. Offering skills training and support can provide viable alternatives to street life. By diligently addressing the gaps that fuel this deplorable behavior, communities can work towards ending teenage prostitution.
This is therefore a clarion call to all stakeholders nationwide to recognise the problem for what it is and come up with a plan on how to bring it to an end. https://www.monitor.co.ug/uganda/oped/editorial/deal-with-root-cause-of-teenage-prostitution-5501678
