World Refugee Day, observed annually on June 20, brings into focus the critical reality that millions remain displaced globally due to conflict, violence, and persecution. This year’s theme, ‘Until everyone is safe,’ serves as a powerful reminder and a call to collective action.
Uganda stands as a leading nation in refugee support, currently hosting over two million individuals seeking asylum. This significant number represents countless individual narratives of resilience, loss, and the enduring hope for safety. People continue to arrive from regions such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, where insecurity persists, and from South Sudan, grappling with political instability and climate-related challenges. The ongoing crisis in Sudan has also led many to seek refuge in Uganda, intensifying humanitarian needs.
These individuals are not mere statistics; they are parents, children, students, and professionals whose lives have been irrevocably altered. Seventy-five years ago, the 1951 Refugee Convention established a global promise to protect those fleeing danger. This promise remains a cornerstone of international humanitarian law, ensuring the right to seek asylum, which encompasses legal protection, shelter, healthcare, education, and the opportunity to rebuild lives with dignity.
Uganda has consistently upheld this promise through decades of an open-door policy. The nation’s host communities deserve significant recognition for their generosity in sharing resources and integrating refugees into their villages and towns, despite their own challenges. However, the responsibility for refugee support is a shared one, extending beyond Uganda’s borders.
Supporting refugees is a collective endeavor. It requires safeguarding access to asylum, promoting humane policies, and providing substantial aid to host countries like Uganda. Investing in solutions that foster self-reliance and inclusion for refugees is crucial, as is countering misinformation with empathy and solidarity. The promise of protection was never intended for a select few, but for all. Until every person is safe, the global commitment remains unfinished.
