The Ugandan government has issued a strong call for national unity and collective action, emphasizing the vital role of citizens and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in propelling the country’s economic growth and development.
This appeal comes as the nation gears up for the UG Catalyst Summit 2026, a significant platform designed to foster collaboration between private sector entities, SME associations, policymakers, development partners, and government officials. The summit, slated for June 25-26, 2026, seeks to formulate robust strategies for accelerating Uganda’s economic trajectory.
Officials from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives and the National Planning Authority (NPA) highlighted that the summit will align with the government’s ambitious 10-fold economic growth strategy. Key focus areas include agro-industrialization, trade enhancement, mineral-based industrialization, and value addition.
Patrick Mugisha, Commissioner for Business Development and Quality Assurance, revealed the government’s aspiration to see Uganda’s economy expand from its current approximate $50 billion to $500 billion within the next 15 years. He stressed that SMEs are crucial to realizing this vision, with the summit intended to forge stronger partnerships for investment and innovation.
Asuman Golooba from the NPA acknowledged Uganda’s progress but pointed to unemployment as a persistent challenge. He reiterated that combined national effort is indispensable for achieving substantial economic transformation and creating greater opportunities for Ugandans.
Ssekimpi Philip Kakembo, representing the Uganda Tailors Association, underscored the necessity of a strengthened partnership between the government and industry players. He believes this collaboration will be instrumental in expanding local enterprises, generating employment, and boosting production.
The UG Catalyst Summit is anticipated to generate actionable recommendations aimed at supporting SMEs, fostering industrialization, improving competitiveness, and increasing Uganda’s presence in regional and international markets, all contributing to the nation’s long-term goal of inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
