The “Pearl of Africa: Uganda–Hangzhou Tourism & Investment Conference” was recently held in Hangzhou, China, by the Ugandan Embassy in Beijing. The summit brought together officials, investors, and business leaders to foster deeper collaboration between Uganda and the prominent Chinese city.
The conference underscored the growing subnational partnerships between Uganda and China, with a keen focus on advancing tourism development, attracting investment, enhancing the hospitality sector, and exploring technology-driven solutions.
Ambassador Oliver Wonekha, Head of Mission at the Ugandan Embassy in Beijing, and Mr. Lu Jun, Deputy District Chief of Xihu District, officially opened the event. Both leaders emphasized the mutual benefits of strengthening ties, highlighting opportunities in tourism, trade, innovation, and cultural exchange.
Ambassador Wonekha reiterated Uganda’s dedication to cultivating partnerships that support sustainable tourism growth and attract significant investment. Hangzhou, a major hub for tourism and innovation in China, was identified as a key partner with its robust tourism industry and advanced digital economy.
Discussions centered on leveraging Hangzhou’s expertise in smart tourism, hotel management, and digital solutions to complement Uganda’s burgeoning tourism sector. Ambassador Richard Kabonero presented Uganda’s investment potential, emphasizing its strategic location in East Africa, its young population, and an improving business climate.
“Uganda offers tremendous opportunities for investors seeking sustainable and high-growth ventures,” stated Ambassador Kabonero. “By combining Uganda’s rich natural and tourism assets with Hangzhou’s expertise in technology, innovation, hospitality management, and investment capital, we can build partnerships that create value for both sides while contributing to sustainable economic development.”
The conference culminated in the signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between Ugandan and Hangzhou-based entities. These agreements are poised to boost tourism, strengthen business connections, and support the development of modern tourism infrastructure and services in Uganda.
The Ugandan Embassy in Beijing expressed confidence that the conference will serve as a catalyst for increased economic cooperation and investment, further solidifying the long-standing friendship between Uganda and China. This initiative is reported by Nile Post.
