Uganda and the prominent Chinese city of Hangzhou have solidified a strategic alliance through a series of cooperation agreements designed to bolster tourism, attract investment, facilitate technology transfer, and elevate hospitality standards. This development follows a dedicated tourism and investment conference held in China, organized by the Ugandan Embassy in Beijing.
The “Pearl of Africa: Uganda–Hangzhou Tourism & Investment Conference” served as a crucial platform, convening government officials, potential investors, tourism industry stakeholders, and business leaders from both Uganda and China. The primary objective was to identify and cultivate opportunities for synergistic growth in tourism, trade, innovation, and cultural exchange.
Uganda’s Ambassador to China, Ms. Oliver Wonekha, and Deputy District Chief of Xihu District People’s Government, Lu Jun, presided over the proceedings, emphasizing the importance of strengthened bilateral ties. Ambassador Wonekha reiterated Uganda’s dedication to securing high-quality investments and expanding partnerships that champion sustainable tourism growth.
Ambassador Richard Kabonero, Head of the Regional Economic Cooperation Department at Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, presented a detailed overview of Uganda’s investment landscape. He highlighted significant prospects across diverse sectors including tourism, agriculture, manufacturing, minerals, renewable energy, infrastructure, and ICT. Kabonero underscored Uganda’s strategic location in East Africa, its access to regional markets, and ongoing policy reforms as key attractions for foreign investment.
Discussions during the conference explored leveraging Hangzhou’s advanced expertise in smart tourism technologies, digital solutions, hotel management, and investment financing to modernize Uganda’s tourism sector and amplify international arrivals. The event culminated in the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between Ugandan and Hangzhou-based entities, covering areas such as hotel development, joint tourism promotion initiatives, tour operator collaborations, and technology partnerships.
These agreements are anticipated to significantly boost tourism exchange between Uganda and Hangzhou, enhance business connections, and support the vital development of tourism infrastructure and services within Uganda. The Ugandan Embassy in Beijing views this conference as a significant stride in deepening economic cooperation with China and is poised to stimulate a new wave of investment opportunities for Uganda.
