Police in Mityana District are cautioning the public against cooking indoors in spaces lacking adequate ventilation following a tragic incident. Authorities suspect a 48-year-old woman, identified as Nakayiza Ruth, died from carbon monoxide suffocation.

Nakayiza, a resident of Mityana Central Cell, was discovered deceased in her home after neighbours raised concerns about her prolonged absence. They had noticed a strong, unpleasant odour emanating from her locked-from-the-inside house, accompanied by swarms of flies, prompting them to alert relatives and local leaders.

Local authorities were informed, and homicide detectives from Mityana District Police subsequently visited the scene. With the help of residents, officers forced entry into the house and found Nakayiza’s body in a state of decomposition.

Preliminary findings suggest that the deceased had been using a charcoal stove inside a small, poorly ventilated room. It is believed that the accumulation of carbon monoxide, a byproduct of burning charcoal in an enclosed space, led to her suffocation.

Following this incident, police are strongly advising against cooking with charcoal stoves inside bedrooms or dimly ventilated rooms, especially at night. Carbon monoxide is an odourless, colourless gas that can be fatal, particularly when individuals are asleep and unable to detect its presence.

The community has expressed shock over the event, remembering Nakayiza as a hardworking but private individual. Authorities are also encouraging residents to remain vigilant and check on neighbours, particularly those living alone, to prevent similar tragedies and ensure timely assistance during emergencies.
