The health of Erias Lukwago, president of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), is a major concern for his wife, Zawedde Lubwama, following his recent remand to Luzira Prison.

Lubwama stated that her husband has suffered significant physical tolls due to his activism and human rights advocacy. She highlighted that injuries sustained from previous arrests and alleged mishandling by security personnel have left him requiring specialized medical attention.

“He is a human rights fighter. He has been beaten about,” Lubwama told journalists, detailing how past incidents, including one in Rwanda where he was allegedly thrown down during an arrest, have resulted in chronic back problems. Doctors have prescribed specific dietary and rest regimens for his recovery.

Adding to the worries, Lubwama reported that Lukwago conveyed he was in “much pain” and had been “tortured” after his latest arrest. She also revealed that he suffers from pre-existing breathing complications and lung-related issues, making his incarceration in prison particularly alarming.

Lubwama questioned the decision to send Lukwago to Luzira, suggesting that he should have been transferred to a medical facility like Mulago Hospital, with security provided there. Lukwago was arrested earlier in the week and subsequently remanded on charges of misprision of treason.

She expressed gratitude to his legal team, family, and supporters for their solidarity. Lubwama criticized the treatment Lukwago has allegedly received, stating it does not reflect his contributions and embarrasses the nation. She urged greater public engagement, emphasizing the need to speak out against injustice.

The family remains hopeful for bail but acknowledges the uncertainty of the situation, appealing for continued support. “Stand with us still because we need you. We don’t know where we’re going to end,” she pleaded.
