Nestled along the scenic shores of Lake Albert, Kikonko Lodge has emerged as a beacon of sustainable tourism in Uganda’s Albertine region. What began as a casual visit transformed into a significant investment by BFP Investments Limited, a venture supported by the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) since 2018.
Founder Richard Businge was inspired by the area’s breathtaking natural beauty and the potential for growth fueled by improving infrastructure and the burgeoning oil and gas sector. “We saw the immense potential,” Businge stated, highlighting the captivating views of Lake Albert.
The investment journey was significantly smoothed by the UIA. Businge noted the straightforward registration process and the supportive guidance from the authority, particularly in navigating challenges related to land titling. This collaboration underscores the UIA’s commitment to fostering investor success.
Kikonko Lodge places a strong emphasis on local empowerment. It directly employs eight Ugandans, ensuring gender balance, and creates numerous indirect economic opportunities. Local tour guides receive training and regular engagement, while the lodge prioritizes sourcing supplies like fish, eggs, and building materials from nearby communities, including women’s groups in Buliisa.
Financially, the lodge has seen remarkable growth. “Our annual revenues have grown significantly and continue to rise,” Businge shared, reflecting confidence in the business’s trajectory. The lodge has already completed Phase One with eight rooms and plans further expansions to meet increasing demand. To cater to a wider audience, a popular camping site has been developed for adventure travelers.
Innovation is key to Kikonko Lodge’s strategy, especially as it operates outside traditional national park areas. The lodge hosts events like marathons and cycling festivals, drawing visitors and positioning the region as an emerging destination. They are also preparing for increased tourism during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Environmental conservation is central to the lodge’s identity. Kikonko Lodge is recognized for its plastic-free environment and reliance on solar power. “We use reusable glass bottles and provide guests with free filtered drinking water,” Businge explained, showcasing a commitment to minimizing waste and protecting the natural landscape.
The lodge also serves as a platform for local culture, featuring a gift shop that supports local artists and aims to connect them with wider markets, thereby preserving heritage and creating jobs.
Despite challenges such as limited access to piped water and grid electricity, Kikonko Lodge, with an investment valued at approximately USD 250,000, continues to thrive through resilience, innovation, and community focus. Businge advises prospective investors to seek guidance from the UIA for a smoother investment experience in Uganda.
