A malfunctioning oxygen sensor, often referred to as an O2 sensor, can be a hidden drain on your vehicle’s fuel economy. These crucial components play a vital role in monitoring the amount of unburned oxygen exiting your engine’s exhaust.

By sending this data to the engine control unit (ECU), the O2 sensor helps the computer precisely regulate the fuel-air mixture. The ideal ratio is approximately 14.7 parts of air to 1 part of fuel. When the O2 sensor fails, it can send incorrect readings to the ECU, leading to either too much or too little fuel being injected into the engine.

A rich fuel mixture, where too much fuel is present, is particularly wasteful. This means your engine is burning more gasoline than necessary, directly translating to higher fuel consumption and a diminished miles per gallon (MPG) rating. Over time, this inefficiency can add a substantial amount to your fuel bills.

Beyond fuel economy, a faulty O2 sensor can also lead to other performance issues. You might notice a decrease in engine power, rough idling, or even the check engine light illuminating on your dashboard. In severe cases, it can contribute to catalytic converter damage, a more expensive repair.
