Security operatives have transferred former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago to Kira Division Police Station, following his apprehension by security personnel. Lukwago, also a leader with the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) and counsel in a treason case involving Dr. Kizza Besigye, is being held on accusations of misprision of treason, which he rejects.
A detective at Kira Police Station indicated that Lukwago was brought to the facility shortly before dawn under heavy guard. “A UPDF vehicle dropped off Lukwago at the station at about 5:40am,” the detective stated, adding that he was permitted access to his phone and subsequently contacted his legal team.
Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke confirmed the detention, stating Lukwago is being held for failing to report knowledge of treasonous activities. His arrest on Monday at his Kampala home led to him being taken to an undisclosed location. His whereabouts were only clarified after the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, posted on X about his military custody.
Sources claim investigators are probing allegations linking Lukwago to meetings where alleged government overthrow plans were discussed in cities including Kampala, Nairobi, and Athens. However, no concrete evidence has been presented in court.
Family and political allies, including former KCCA Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura, were initially denied access to Lukwago. His lawyer, Medard Lubega Sseggona, was later permitted to see him. Opposition figures have condemned the arrest as an abduction due to the initial lack of transparency regarding his location.
