EnviroServ: Turning Uganda's Hazardous Waste into a Multi-Million Dollar Opportunity

When Uganda's oil and gas sector emerged, it brought a significant challenge: hazardous waste management. EnviroServ (U) Limited recognized this gap, transforming it into a pioneering environmental infrastructure investment that now supports the industry, creates jobs, and benefits local communities. In the early days of Uganda’s oil and gas exploration, managing the resulting hazardous waste presented a major hurdle. Local capacity was limited, leading to temporary storage solutions with few treatment or disposal options. EnviroServ (U) Limited, however, saw this challenge as a significant opportunity.

Established in 2013 as a joint venture, EnviroServ aimed to fill this critical void. Peter Odil, Facility Operation Manager, noted the clear market need driven by exploration activities in the Albertine Graben. “Waste management was a grey area in Uganda, and we believed it had enormous potential,” Odil explained. This vision materialized into the Nyamasoga Waste Treatment and Disposal Facility, one of the country’s first specialized sites for handling hazardous industrial waste.

The company has since made substantial multi-million-dollar investments in world-class infrastructure, including engineered landfills, treatment facilities, and laboratories. Growth accelerated with Uganda’s burgeoning oil and gas sector, and particularly with the advent of the Tilenga Project. “The Tilenga Project significantly boosted our operations and revenue, enabling us to expand and plan for even greater diversification,” Odil stated.

EnviroServ is now a crucial part of the petroleum sector’s waste management value chain. Beyond infrastructure, the company prioritizes local content development, employing over 124 Ugandans with just one expatriate. Odil highlighted the focus on knowledge transfer, stating, “Today, I am able to pass on that knowledge to other Ugandans who will continue building the industry in the future.”

Innovation is central to EnviroServ’s strategy. A Thermal Desorption Unit allows for the recovery and reuse of oil from drilling waste, enhancing resource efficiency. Waste treatment capacity has quadrupled, processing over 450 cubic meters daily. The company is also investing in future growth, planning a new hazardous waste disposal cell and exploring waste-to-energy solutions and recycling initiatives.

EnviroServ’s commitment extends to its community through initiatives like the Nyamasoga Water Project, a significant investment improving clean water access for residents. Despite operational challenges in a regulated sector, EnviroServ remains dedicated to compliance and optimistic about Uganda’s investment potential. Their journey exemplifies how strategic investment in an underserved niche can yield both economic prosperity and environmental stewardship.
