Colonel Edith Nakalema, leading the State House Investors’ Protection Unit, has officially called upon two recently appointed ministers to actively engage with her office. The objective is to foster a more welcoming environment for both domestic and international investors operating in Uganda. The ministers in question are Mr. Sanjay Tanna, the Minister for Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, and Ms. Aminah Mukalazi, the State Minister for Privatisation and Investment.
During an initial meeting in Kampala with the ministers and key stakeholders from the manufacturing and digital technology sectors, Col Nakalema stressed the importance of their roles. She highlighted the necessity of supporting efforts to dismantle networks that engage in extortion and other corrupt practices that can harm business growth.
Col Nakalema expressed satisfaction with the ministers’ commitment, noting that Mr. Tanna showed “great zeal” in understanding how investors are protected from “wrong elements or the corrupt,” and how technology can be leveraged. Ms. Mukalazi also affirmed her dedication to the cause. The Head of State House Investors’ Protection Unit also indicated that the government plans to discuss long-standing tax concerns, particularly those affecting the textile and plastics industries, with manufacturers.
Manufacturers have frequently voiced concerns over the substantial tax burden on their sectors, warning of escalating production costs, potential job losses, and significant price hikes. In response, Mr. Tanna pledged to implement an “open-door policy” to allow investors to freely express their issues and seek necessary guidance. He also encouraged Huawei to consider establishing call centers in Uganda to generate employment for the country’s numerous graduates.
Ms. Mukalazi underscored the need for united action across government bodies. “Division and uncoordinated ways of working are the ones that frustrate our investors,” she stated, advocating for a collaborative approach. Regarding the ban on tree cutting, the ministers noted that President Museveni is set to meet with affected investors to discuss a way forward.
