Officials from Adjumani District, the Ministry of Health, and the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) recently visited Awindiri Market, a major commercial hub, to gauge the community’s readiness for an Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak. The impromptu inspection aimed to assess public understanding of Ebola, the implementation of preventative measures, and the general preparedness of the local population.

Emmanuel Okware, Deputy Resident District Commissioner, explained that the taskforce is conducting these checks in public spaces to understand how well residents grasp the risks and transmission methods of Ebola. “We want to ensure that vendors and customers alike are observing preventive measures,” Okware stated, emphasizing the market’s role as a potential hotspot for disease spread due to high foot traffic.

Vendors at Awindiri Market confirmed receiving educational messages about Ebola from district health teams. However, Pius Eruwaga, Chairperson of the Awindiri Market Vendors Association, noted a critical shortfall: “Our biggest challenge is the lack of handwashing stations.” He appealed for support to ensure adequate facilities for market users.

In parallel, security has been heightened along Uganda’s borders with South Sudan to curb unauthorized entries, a measure intended to mitigate disease transmission risks. The OPM also reported that 47 asylum seekers have been placed under quarantine at the Nyumanzi Refugee Reception Centre as a precautionary measure, with ongoing monitoring and support.

Adjumani District Health Inspector, Wilson Drici, confirmed that intensified public health campaigns, including radio talk shows and outreach programs, are underway to keep communities informed and vigilant. John Bosco Basajjasubi from the National Public Health Emergency Operations Centre stressed the importance of markets in public health interventions, urging continued adherence to hygiene practices and prompt reporting of any suspected cases.

This exercise is part of broader efforts to bolster Ebola preparedness in border districts like Adjumani, which manage significant refugee populations and cross-border movements.
