Bishop Gaster Nsereko of the West Buganda Diocese has exhorted church leaders to embody the very essence of God, emphasizing that their creation in God’s image necessitates a consistent reflection of His character. This charge was delivered as the keynote address at the annual Archdeacons and Wives Retreat for the North Kigezi Diocese, which convened at Zebra Hotel in Masaka.

Drawing inspiration from Ephesians 5:1, Bishop Nsereko highlighted the unique status of humanity as being deliberately made in God’s image, stating, “Let us make man in our image.” He underscored that this divine likeness means God is the original and humanity is the image, therefore, believers must intentionally manifest God’s goodness and nature in their everyday actions and leadership.

“An image cannot reflect what is not on the object,” Bishop Nsereko pertinently noted, urging the gathered leaders to be faithful mirrors of God’s character to those they serve. The retreat, which officially began with the Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Onesphorus Asiimwe, and his wife, Ms. Florence Asiimwe, also featured insights from retired Bishop Henry Katumba Tamale. Bishop Tamale encouraged servant leadership rooted in integrity and accountability, reminding participants that ‘the means must justify the goal.’

Bishop Asiimwe further stressed the critical need for spiritual rejuvenation among leaders, acknowledging the burnout often experienced in ministry. He described the retreat as a vital period for “renewal, revival, replenishment, rekindling, revitalisation,” and other essential ‘re’ words, essential for sustained and effective service. Lay Canon Kellen Nampurira Mugarura, the proprietor of Zebra Hotel, welcomed the delegates and commended the choice of venue for its suitability for spiritual retreat and fellowship.

The retreat is scheduled to conclude on Friday, June 19, 2026.
