The Executive Director of the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), Thembo Nyombi, has cautioned musicians and event organizers, emphasizing that performance stages are intended for artistic expression and community engagement, not for settling personal disputes or publicly shaming individuals.
Nyombi highlighted that audiences purchase tickets expecting entertainment and inspiration, and transforming concerts into platforms for personal attacks is unacceptable and diminishes professional standards. He referenced the Stage Plays and Public Entertainment Act, under which permits are granted with the understanding that performances will respect consumer rights and adhere to the law.
The UCC chief expressed deep concern over incidents that have included public attacks, performance disruptions, and the appearance of weapons on stage. These actions, he noted, pose significant safety risks to attendees and create logistical hurdles for event promoters.
This warning follows a recent controversy involving veteran musician Kazibwe Kapo, where a guest was allegedly humiliated during an event. Nyombi confirmed a meeting with Kapo to address the incident and indicated that regulatory action would be taken, including issuing summonses to performers involved in compromising public dignity.
UCC also announced plans to enhance its oversight of live entertainment events nationwide. Future measures will aim to ensure performances are properly vetted and comply with Ugandan laws concerning public decency and the protection of minors. Nyombi stressed that maintaining professionalism is vital for public trust in live entertainment and warned that failure to uphold acceptable standards could harm the growth of Uganda’s entertainment sector.
