A devastating incident in Abari Zone, Kirewa Sub-county, Tororo District, has left a community in shock after two young sisters, Nyapendi Nosiata (4) and Akello Susan (2), were found dead in their home. Their mother, Jane Awor (22), is currently receiving medical attention.
Preliminary police findings suggest a possible suffocation due to excessive heat and the use of a charcoal stove indoors. On the evening of June 15, Awor reportedly lit a charcoal stove to cook rice inside the sitting room while her children slept in the bedroom. She later felt dizzy and went to sleep.
Awor woke around 4 a.m. to find her children unresponsive, with white foam around their noses. She experienced weakness herself when trying to seek help from her father-in-law. He subsequently took her to a local clinic and alerted the police.
Investigators from Kirewa Sub-county Police Station visited the scene, which was described as a boys’ quarters with a single entrance and two windows. They noted extreme heat and poor ventilation within the structure. The children’s bodies, found on the bed with swollen stomachs and foam from their noses, have been sent for postmortem examination.
A charcoal stove and partially cooked rice were recovered at the scene. While early indications point to suffocation from indoor cooking fumes in a confined space, police have stated that the definitive cause of death will be determined by the postmortem results and the ongoing investigation.
This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with poor ventilation and indoor cooking, especially in enclosed living spaces. Further details are expected as the investigation progresses.
