A somber incident unfolded on the Masaka–Kyotera highway on Wednesday morning, claiming the lives of five individuals and leaving six others with injuries. The fatal crash occurred around 11:00 a.m. at Botero Trading Centre.

According to Twaha Kasirye, the Southern Region Police spokesperson, the collision involved a Hino truck (registration T813DYP/T251ZH) and a taxi, often referred to as a ‘drone’ (registration UBH 378W).

Kasirye explained that the taxi had stopped to allow passengers to disembark when the truck, traveling in the same direction, impacted it with significant force.

The deceased include three adult women and two men. Among those identified were Vega Marks, aged 28, and a 60-year-old woman known as Janati. The victims’ bodies were transported to Kalisizo General Hospital for post-mortem examinations.

The injured, consisting of five men and one woman, were promptly taken to nearby health facilities, including Kalisizo General Hospital and Masaka Regional Referral Hospital, for urgent medical attention.

Authorities have apprehended the truck driver, who is currently assisting with the ongoing investigation. Both vehicles involved in the crash have been impounded for detailed inspection.

While the exact cause is under investigation, preliminary reports suggest that the truck driver may have been exceeding the speed limit and driving recklessly. Police have reiterated their condemnation of dangerous driving practices and implored all motorists to adhere strictly to traffic laws to prevent future tragedies.
