Joel Ssenyonyi, the Leader of the Opposition, has publicly condemned the actions of Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, expressing deep worries about the state of Uganda’s rule of law.
Speaking at Parliament, Ssenyonyi specifically referenced the recent arrest of former Kampala Lord Mayor and lawyer Erias Lukwago, describing the incident as “alarming and troubling.” He highlighted that the detention, reportedly conducted by individuals in military attire, has amplified fears among opposition figures and government critics.
“Everyone is unsafe with Muhoozi’s behaviour of abducting and torturing Ugandans at will,” Ssenyonyi stated, pointing to a perceived pattern of arrests and disappearances affecting politicians, activists, and religious leaders under questionable circumstances.
Ssenyonyi called on Uganda’s state institutions to act swiftly in safeguarding citizens and ensuring accountability for any transgressions. He also critiqued a growing trend where public officials and bodies allegedly seek favour from the military chief, sarcastically remarking on the act of “saluting all his garbage.”
He questioned the security of those engaging in such behaviour and urged leaders, including Members of Parliament and ministers, to speak out against alleged unlawful conduct, rather than praise the military chief. These statements come amidst wider discussions about the military’s role in civilian matters and the protection of political freedoms in the country.
