Six individuals have lost their lives following a devastating crash involving a fuel tanker and a taxi along the Masaka–Mutukula Highway in Kyotera District. The accident took place on Wednesday morning at Botera Trading Centre.
A Tanzanian-registered HINO fuel tanker reportedly lost control and slammed into the rear of a Toyota Hiace taxi that was stopped to drop off a passenger. Eyewitnesses described a terrifying scene, with the taxi being “completely crushed.”
Residents pointed to reckless driving by commercial vehicle operators as a major contributing factor, citing frequent speeding and a lack of consideration for smaller vehicles on the busy highway. Concerns were also raised about the condition of some road sections.
Police arrived at the scene to recover the bodies and transport the injured to Kalisizo Hospital. Greater Masaka Regional Police spokesperson, Twaha Kasirye, confirmed the fatalities, stating that five people died instantly and one later succumbed to their injuries. Three victims have been identified as Resty Naluwooza (40), Maxy Nalubega (28), and Noelina Nayiga (60).
Kasirye urged motorists to adhere strictly to traffic regulations, avoid speeding, and remain vigilant to prevent future tragedies. Both vehicles involved in the crash have been impounded for mechanical inspection as investigations continue.
At Kalisizo Hospital, scenes of grief and distress unfolded as relatives identified the deceased and tended to the injured, many of whom are in critical condition. The accident has reignited serious concerns about road safety on the Masaka–Mutukula Highway, a vital trade route frequently trafficked by heavy vehicles and passenger transport, and known for its history of fatal accidents often linked to speeding and driver fatigue.
