The Opposition Caucus in Uganda’s Parliament has demanded an immediate recall of the legislative body to debate what they term as escalating intimidation and unlawful arrests by security forces. This call comes in the wake of the recent arrest of former Kampala Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago.

Following a closed-door meeting led by the Leader of the Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi, MPs addressed the press, condemning actions they attribute to security operatives, with specific allegations pointed towards the Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Ssenyonyi stated that the conduct of certain security officers is fostering widespread fear, urging all Ugandans, irrespective of political affiliation, to speak out against these alleged abuses and “atrocities” by the UPDF, asserting that “no one is now safe in Uganda.”

The Leader of the Opposition also raised questions regarding the reported appointment of Speaker Anita Among and Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa as “special envoys in Parliament” by Gen. Muhoozi.

Ssenyonyi confirmed he has formally written to the Speaker requesting the urgent parliamentary session to discuss these “ill behaviours” within the UPDF and the overall security climate.

Furthermore, the Opposition Caucus has reiterated its demand for legal action against Anita Among concerning past allegations of corruption linked to her tenure as Speaker.

These demands signify a growing concern among opposition leaders regarding the role of security agencies in Uganda’s political landscape, particularly as the nation approaches its next electoral cycle.
