Andrew Nabimanya, widely recognized as NinyeTabz and a prominent activist for the National Unity Platform (NUP), has reportedly been forcibly taken by security operatives. According to NUP’s Secretary General, David Lewis Rubongoya, Nabimanya was abducted on Wednesday evening from the Kamwokya area in Kampala.
Eyewitness accounts and NUP officials indicate that Nabimanya, who is also an anti-corruption whistleblower and a photojournalist, was apprehended by individuals in plainclothes traveling in vehicles commonly referred to as “drones.” Rubongoya condemned the act, stating, “The lawlessness continues!”
This alleged abduction occurs amidst a backdrop of escalating concerns over “silent abductions” of opposition supporters, a trend the NUP and other pro-change movements claim has intensified since the January general election. The incident also follows closely on the heels of the controversial arrest and detention of prominent opposition lawyer Erias Lukwago.
Lukwago, who was later charged with misprision of treason and remanded, had spent two days in unacknowledged military custody. The continuous targeting of NUP supporters has drawn sharp criticism from opposition leaders, including Joel Ssenyonyi, who lamented the ongoing “senseless abductions.”
NinyeTabz had recently been involved in a public dispute with the State Minister for Local Government, Justine Nameere. He has also been vocal in exposing alleged corruption within the Ministry of Works and Transport, specifically concerning the Commissioner for Transport Regulation and Safety. Despite these allegations, security agencies have consistently denied claims of arbitrary abductions, asserting that all detentions are based on lawful charges and security concerns.
