An incident of mob justice has occurred in Nebbi Municipality, where an unidentified man was fatally beaten by an enraged crowd. The suspected thief was allegedly intercepted in Parombo Town Council, approximately 40 kilometers from Nebbi Town, while riding a motorcycle.

According to Stephen Ongeyowun, the chairperson of Palm Tree Boda Boda Stage, boda boda riders escorted the suspect to Nebbi after he failed to produce ownership documents for the motorcycle. He reportedly promised to provide a logbook or sales agreement upon arrival, but his inability to do so angered the gathered crowd.

Ongeyowun stated that attempts to protect the suspect were overwhelmed by the mob’s fury. He attributed the escalating frustration among motorcycle taxi operators to a rise in theft cases and attacks, particularly during nighttime operations. Ongyowun emphasized that while he understands the riders’ anger, resorting to mob justice is not the answer and that legal channels should always be pursued.

Local residents also voiced their concerns, with some claiming the deceased had prior links to theft allegations in the Angir Cell area. Joyce Alidong, a resident, mentioned frequent complaints about theft incidents potentially involving the victim.

Mob justice continues to be a significant issue across Uganda, despite consistent warnings from security agencies. Authorities urge the public to hand over suspects to the police for proper investigation and legal proceedings, highlighting that vigilante actions are criminal offenses and detrimental to the justice system.

As of now, the police have not released an official statement regarding the unfortunate event. (Source: Daily Monitor)
