Police in the Kira Region have arrested John Sembatya Kaggwa, a 50-year-old resident of Nansana Municipality, Wakiso District, in connection with a series of robberies targeting women. Investigators revealed that Kaggwa allegedly befriended wealthy women, often posing as a successful businessman returning from abroad.

One victim, Pastor Caroline Nakanwagi, recounted an encounter in Jinja City where Kaggwa, introducing himself as Francis M Kakwadi, spoke of lucrative business deals. He later claimed to need a vehicle and requested her assistance in finding one. They visited several car bonds, and after selecting a Toyota Harrier, Kaggwa convinced Nakanwagi to accompany him to withdraw money.

During the drive, Kaggwa allegedly administered a sedative. Nakanwagi later woke up in a hospital, discovering that approximately Shs7 million had been withdrawn from her ATM and mobile money accounts. CCTV footage from a restaurant where they had shared a meal appears to show Kaggwa dropping a substance into her drink.

Upon Kaggwa’s arrest, police recovered contact information for numerous individuals who accused him of similar offenses. Reports indicate that at least 30 people, predominantly women, claimed to have been drugged and robbed by the suspect. Other alleged victims included a Kampala resident who lost merchandise from her shop and a mattress dealer who reportedly lost Shs7 million.

Kaggwa was apprehended on June 2 in Nansana Municipality and later charged with aggravated robbery at the Jinja Magistrates’ Court on June 5. He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in court again on July 6.
