Enid Origumisiriza Atuheire, the Member of Parliament for Kabale District, has issued a strong call to action for Ugandans to embrace voluntary blood donation. Speaking at a recent blood drive held at Kabale Main Stadium, she emphasized that a consistent supply of donated blood is crucial for saving lives, particularly for accident victims, expectant mothers, children with severe anemia, and patients undergoing surgery.

Origumisiriza highlighted that Uganda is grappling with persistent blood shortages, which endanger numerous lives as blood cannot be artificially produced. She specifically encouraged the youth to step forward, noting that a single donation can significantly impact and potentially save multiple individuals.

The blood donation drive was a collaborative effort by the Rotary Club of Lake Bunyonyi and the Kabale Corporate Club, coinciding with activities for World Blood Donor Day. Aggrey Masiko, President of the Rotary Club of Lake Bunyonyi, echoed the MP’s sentiments, stressing that the challenge of blood scarcity can be overcome through collective community action, as the need for blood is unwavering.

Participants, like Daudi Turyagumanawe from Rukiga District, shared personal motivations, including witnessing firsthand the struggles of patients in accessing blood. Turyagumanawe described blood donation as a fundamental civic duty for all eligible citizens.

Alex Nkwasibwe, leading the Kabale District blood bank team for the event, noted that the partnership with the Kabale Corporate Club was instrumental in mobilizing donors from various organizations. This collaboration helped boost the number of blood units collected for the Uganda Blood Transfusion Service, underscoring the importance of such community engagement in addressing critical healthcare needs.

This initiative aimed to raise awareness about the vital role of regular blood donation and to bolster the nation’s blood reserves, ultimately supporting healthcare facilities and the patients they serve. The event underscored that consistent voluntary donation is key to meeting the ongoing demand for blood across Uganda.
