Eduardo Bolsonaro, the 41-year-old son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, has been convicted by Brazil’s Supreme Court. The court found him guilty of seeking U.S. intervention during his father’s trial for allegedly plotting a coup.

Prosecutors had charged Eduardo last year with lobbying U.S. officials in an attempt to secure tariffs or sanctions against Brazil, aiming to aid his father’s legal defense. Following this conviction, Brazil’s Supreme Court sentenced Eduardo Bolsonaro in absentia to four years and two months in prison.

Eduardo, a former congressman, had relocated to the United States in 2025. He has previously described his move as seeking “exile” due to fears of arrest if he returned to Brazil. He publicly advocated for support for his father from the Trump administration, which had characterized the case against Jair Bolsonaro as a “witch hunt.”

During his father’s presidency, Eduardo Bolsonaro engaged in efforts to secure U.S. support. This included lobbying the Trump administration, which subsequently imposed a substantial tariff on Brazil. The elder Bolsonaro was eventually sentenced to 27 years for his role in a plot to overturn his 2022 election defeat, a case linked to the January 2023 storming of government buildings by his supporters.

Eduardo Bolsonaro took to social media to denounce the conviction as “baseless and senseless,” suggesting the court’s motives were to prevent him from running in future elections. He also claimed a lack of due process and that he was only made aware of the case through media reports.
