The Inspector General of Government (IGG), Aisha Batala Nalule, has stressed the critical need for updated laws to bolster Uganda’s efforts in reclaiming assets acquired through corrupt means. This call for stronger regulations arrives as investigations surrounding former Speaker Anita Annet Among are reportedly nearing their final stages.
Sources indicate that investigators have been actively securing properties linked to Among. The process has involved the seizure of crucial documents and electronic devices, along with the impounding of several high-value vehicles. These actions are part of ongoing inquiries into her financial dealings, wealth declarations, and adherence to the Leadership Code Act.
Nalule highlighted that the proposed Anti-Corruption (Confiscation and Recovery Orders) Rules, 2026, are designed to equip courts and anti-corruption bodies with a more robust legal foundation. This framework would empower them to effectively trace, confiscate, and recover assets suspected of originating from illicit activities.
Authorities also believe these new rules will effectively address existing legal gaps that have historically hindered or complicated asset recovery operations. The anticipated adoption of these regulations is expected to significantly improve the government’s capacity to retrieve public funds lost to corruption, thereby enhancing accountability among public service officials. The push for these measures follows widespread public concern over high-profile corruption cases and renewed demands for stringent actions against individuals found to possess unexplained wealth.
