Erias Lukwago, a prominent opposition figure and former Mayor of Kampala, has been taken into custody by security operatives. The veteran politician and lawyer, who also heads the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), was reportedly apprehended at his home in Wakaliga. His arrest on Monday has sparked widespread condemnation from opposition leaders, legal professionals, and human rights advocates, with many questioning the legality and circumstances of his detention.
Sources indicate that authorities are linking Lukwago to the treason case involving four-time presidential contender Dr. Kizza Besigye, for whom Lukwago serves as a defense lawyer. Besigye has been in detention for over 500 days on related charges. Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke confirmed Lukwago’s holding at Kiira Division Police in Wakiso District, stating that charges of treason and misprision of treason were being considered.
The arrest operation was described as dramatic, with reports of operatives entering Lukwago’s bedroom. The situation has been further complicated by public statements from military chief Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who made seemingly contradictory remarks on social media regarding Lukwago’s detention and potential sentence, as well as making strong threats against Dr. Besigye.
Lukwago is also involved in a separate legal matter representing Dr. Besigye against Gen. Muhoozi, stemming from alleged social media threats against the opposition leader. The detention of Lukwago adds to growing concerns about the rule of law and the use of alleged abductions, often referred to as “drones,” against Ugandans and foreigners.
Family and friends were reportedly denied access to Lukwago at the police station, with authorities indicating that only his lawyer would be permitted to see him initially. The DPP is expected to review the case file before any formal court proceedings commence.
