Former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago was transferred from Kira Division Police Headquarters to Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, reportedly to be charged with treason. Lukwago had been held at Kira Police Station since Monday, recording a statement in the presence of his lawyer, Medard Lubega Ssegona.

His family, friends, and supporters were largely denied access to him at the police station, with a significant police presence keeping journalists and others at bay. Witnesses described Lukwago as appearing visibly frail and having a shaved head when he was escorted into a police pickup under heavy security.

Police sources indicated that Lukwago is expected to face treason-related charges, though official spokespersons declined to comment on the specifics, stating that details would be revealed in court. Concerns about Lukwago’s health have been raised by his allies, including former Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura, who stated that Lukwago’s personal doctors and wife were not permitted to see him.

His legal team and family had been searching for his whereabouts across multiple police stations since Monday amidst official silence. A large contingent of lawyers, political figures, religious leaders, and supporters gathered at Makindye Court awaiting his appearance and the formal charges, with his lawyers prepared to apply for bail.

This event unfolds amidst an atmosphere of heightened security and public anticipation, as Lukwago, a prominent political figure, is brought before the judiciary.
