Erias Lukwago, a prominent opposition figure and president of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), has been formally charged with misprision of treason. This offense pertains to allegedly knowing about plans to unlawfully overthrow the government but failing to report such information to the authorities.

The charges were brought against Mr. Lukwago at the Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court, where he appeared on Wednesday afternoon and entered a plea of not guilty.

Lukwago, also a lawyer and a former Lord Mayor of Kampala, was arrested earlier in the week. His detention sparked widespread condemnation from various opposition leaders, legal professionals, and human rights advocates, who raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding his apprehension.

Following his arraignment, the court ordered that Mr. Lukwago be remanded to Luzira Prison. He is scheduled to appear in court again on June 22, 2026.
